Crowdmark is a user-friendly, collaborative online grading and analytics platform. It provides fast and efficient online grading for multiple markers on a question by question basis. It can be used for both exams as well as assignments and it comes with free analytics tools. It also integrates with Canvas, allowing you to pull student lists from Canvas into Crowdmark.

However, some students made time to attend a series of four Maths Essentials Workshops, part of a new initiative that I’m running. The workshops are part of the academic skills development offered to students by the Business School’s Innovative Learning and Teaching team, in conjunction with Economics, Statistics and Accounting, and Finance.

Earlier this year, the University of Auckland moved to Canvas, our new Learning Management System (LMS). Compared to the previous, in-house solution (Cecil), we’ve found Canvas offers improved teaching and learning tools and features. These include better learning analytics and more organic integration with web services like Google Docs, Google Drive, Khan Academy, YouTube, Turnitin, and Flickr.

The ‘Embedding Employability in the Curriculum Project’ is currently offering a three-year full-time PhD scholarship of interest for honours and masters students currently in the fields of Education, Management and Psychology. The scholarship offers full fees payment across three years of full-time PhD study and paid teaching assistance duties up to two days a week. It will commence early in 2017.

Recent feedback from Business School students has been that they overwhelmingly support the move from Cecil to Canvas, and really like Canvas’ user-friendly features. The most common request was for more consistency in how Canvas courses are presented across the Business School. In ILT’s final monthly seminar for 2016, we discussed how to address this request.

This year’s Learn Do Share event was a great success with speakers from both inside and outside the Business School sharing their experiences regarding pedagogy in technology. We heard from Business School Teaching Excellence Award winners who transformed their courses as well as staff members on various methods for assessing and marking students online. There was also an excellent review on what matters most to students in regards to Canvas and improvements that can enhance their learning.

In this seminar, I talked about how Canvas “hacks” and an Excel tool I created for the Business School’s Teaching Initiatives Scheme can enable personalised student engagement opportunities.
